Beginning in Fall 2019, Sweet Briar College students can earn a four-year diploma in elementary training, thanks to bills handed via Virginia’s 2018 General Assembly. Students can still opt for a comprehensive 5-yr Master of Arts in Teaching diploma, which the College has presented since 2004.

“Elementary coaching calls for interdisciplinary questioning,” says Sweet Briar College’s training program director Meredith McCool. “This new major will allow Destiny Elementary instructors to engage in coursework throughout the College while honing their practice in nearby schools. And at the end of 4 or five years, they may graduate with a degree that in reality states their ardor: essential education.”

Sweet Briar is one of several schools and universities in the country to begin imparting undergraduate tiers in schooling. Governor Ralph Northam announced on Monday that the state policy boards for standard, secondary, and publish-secondary education had authorized a total of 53 new teacher instruction programs and 25 new degrees so one can permit graduates to become teachers after earning 4-12 months tiers in training.

“We need to continue to be centered on assembly the growing desires of our public education system to prepare the Commonwealth’s college students for success and cozy Virginia’s economic future,” Governor Northam stated in a release. “As we paint to bolster Virginia’s educator pipeline, I am thrilled to look at the approval of these sweeping changes to create new pathways to the study room and assist the growth of both the supply and the diversity of exceptional instructors in the Commonwealth.
